what are seo mistakes

Are you Making These Mistakes?

Many people build a website, spend a little time promoting it and then wonder why they are not getting lots of nice targeted traffic from the search engine.
If you have a website and you are finding that you have less traffic than you dreamt of, you may want to check to see if you are making any of these 7 search engine optimization mistakes.
Here they are (in no particular order).
Are you making these SEO Mistakes?

SEO Mistake #1 - Choosing a Keyword that is too Competitive

This is one of the most common SEO mistakes - choosing a keyword that has millions of competing websites.
If you have a weight loss site for example, it may seem like a good choice to go for a keyword like "lose weight fast" or "how to lose weight fast" as both these searches get over 100,000 searches per month in Google.
However, if you go to Google and type in either of these phrases you will see that MILLIONS of web pages are returned.
If you want to get good traffic you need to get on to page 2 or preferably page 1 of Google, so it makes much more sense to start with a keyword phrase that you have a chance of hitting the top spot with!

SEO Mistake #2 - Choosing a Keyword that is Unpopular

The second SEO mistake is choosing a keyword that does not get many searches per month.
A quick and free way to check the searches per month for a keyword is to go to the Google Adwords keyword tool and enter that phrase. Be sure to uncheck "Broad Match" and check "Exact Match" to get accurate results.
No keyword tool is 100% accurate, but it does give you a good indication of the searches per month and makes it easy to compare with other keywords.
If you are looking for keywords for blog posts, it's ok to pick keywords with only a few hundred searches per month, but if you are trying to find a keyword for your home page, you need to be looking for something with thousands of searches per month.

SEO Mistake #3 - Not Putting Your Keywords in the TITLE Tag

The TITLE tag is the most important place on your web page for keywords and has more weight than any other tag.
Don't waste this space by adding your domain name or the word "home". Use the space for your keyword phrase(s) and separate them with the "|" character.

SEO Mistake #4 - Keyword Stuffing

I recommend picking just 1-2 keyword phrases for each page on your site - at least initially.
The more keyword phrases you try to optimize a page for, the less likely you are to achieve results for any of them!
If you feel that 1-2 are not enough, remember that you can optimize other pages on your website for different keywords and you can also add more keywords to a page once you are ranked well for the initial 1-2 keywords.

SEO Mistake #5 - Not Building Enough Backlinks

The main thing that separates your site and your competitor's site from that #1 spot in Google is the number (and quality) of backlinks.
If the #1 site has 4000 backlinks, you are unlikely to overtake them by building 1000 links.
Spend time acquiring quality backlinks and use a backlink checker tool once per month to track your progress against your competitor. This will ensure that you don't lose site of your goal!

SEO Mistake #6 - Only Optimizing your Home Page

Most websites have more than one page, and although the home page is typically the page that gets the most visitors, it is not the only page you should optimize.
I recommend choosing a different keyword phrase for every page or blog post on your website. Even if you target low traffic, low competition phrases, this will soon add up and the combined total could amount to even more traffic than your home page gets.

SEO Mistake #7 - Impatience

The final mistake in this list is impatience. This is something that I see a lot and often results in people giving up on their SEO efforts, or even with their whole website.
Search engine optimization takes time - usually at least a few months. You are not going to get targeted traffic to your site overnight without paying for it, so it is important to set your expectations early on and track your progress regularly.
If you continue to write unique, well optimized content and build high quality backlinks to your website, your search engine optimzation efforts will pay off!
