How to make a time-lapse

Before starting this tutorial, let's start with the basics: what is a time-lapse?
The time-lapse photography is a technique in which still photographs taken during a period of time and then play them at speed, and thus make clear the change of any place or object within a period of time, otherwise would be very slow.
Cameras and Accessories
This technique can be done with any camera, but of course, if you use cameras that have built a system of time-lapse, or that they can attach a trigger, the results will be much better.
  • The Nikon 1 J1 , 1 V1 Nikon , the D700 and the new D4 have incorporated advanced systems for the realization of a time-lapse. Indeed, the D4 internally makes the process of time-lapse and turns it into a video file.
  • The lenses are used depending on what you want to post. When you want to make a time-lapse of open space, natural or urban, we recommend a wide angle. For time-lapses of close-ups should be used for macros and zoom lenses, tele objectives.
  • It is important to have a memory card high capacity to store the large number of photographs needed to create time-lapse.
  • Using a tripod is important for the end of a time-lapse is seeing the light changes and elements over time with different photos in one frame. The tripod allows you to keep the same position without changing the frame. Of course you can perform more advanced time-lapses in which the frames are changed and spaces but this is subject of another entry.
Other factors to consider
Depending on how the creative needs of the camera can be manually or automatically. For example, if you want to see as the day darkens over time is recommended to begin and end the time-lapse with the same exposure. For correct exposure for the entire time-lapse is advisable to automatic mode. Again, everything is in the photographer's intent, there is no exact recipe.
The resolution must allow details to some extent as much detail can cause problems in editing the material.
The time interval between the photographs depends on the intention of the photographer. Show rapid changes require more pictures, but on the contrary, to show slow changes many fewer images are needed for the construction of time-lapse.
Tips
  • Avoid shooting in RAW mode makes you lose it and burst speed card becomes full very quickly.
  • Shoot in JPEG with a resolution of 3 megapixels, enough to make a full HD at 1080p.
  • Take the battery 100% charged and keep a spare.
  • Make a time-lapse takes time and patience, so take a book, snacks and music.
